Brasília – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Cargill Foundation, in a partnership between Porto Velho’s City Hall (RO) and Embrapa Agricultural Instrumentation, (Sao Carlos – SP), presented to the community of Rural Producers Association of Linha 28 de Novembro – ASPROL 28, a social technology which has as main goal to treat the family houses sewage, reducing the environmental impact.
The event took place on March, 4 2010. The initiative, funded by USAID and implemented by Cargill Foundation, will assist approximately twenty families in the community. The technology used for this purpose, also known as “Biodigester Septic Tank”, was developed by Embrapa Agricultural Instrumentation and it is a simple way to treat the sewage in the rural zone.
This treatment system will benefit the environment, due to the sewage that will be conducted from the toilets and later transformed into organic fertilizer through the bio-digestion process, this will be used in plantations, vivarium, among others. Therefore, the water table will not be contaminated. Embrapa provided the technology for the implementation and technical support, and Porto Velho’s City Hall, through the Environment Secretariat, provided the labor force and machinery for the application of technology.
Porto Velho was chosen to be part of this project due to the city’s location which is part of the Amazon Biome, one of the priority areas for the Cargill Foundation. Furthermore this region has a high demand of sanitation.
The region “Linha 28 de Novembro” has the essential conditions for the implementation of the technology.
