 Partnership between USAID, Motorola, Rogério Monteiro Foundation, Itarema City Hall and IABS starts PET project

The PET project aims at collecting and recycling plastic bottles with community participation.

ITAREMA -   In December 2009, consultants of the Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentável (IABS), an institute for development of sustainability in Brasil, initiated the project activities of PET – Preservation, Education and Work, developed in Itarema (CE), at the district of Almofala. The project is a result of the partnership between USAID, Motorola, Rogério Monteiro Foundation, Itarema City Hall and IABS.

Seeking perform actions for sustainable development, the PET project aims at collecting and recycling plastic bottles with community participation, looking for the preservation of the environment and the promotion of  food security for the population in less-favored area.

Also in December 2009, the place where will be centralized the recycling material collection, located in Itarema, was defined and reformed. The IABS’ consultants met with 70 local representatives (fishermen, beach stalls, artisans, indigenous community representatives and educators) and 120 housewives.

The objective of these meetings was to introduce the guidelines of PET project and present basic concepts about food security and environmental preservation. The PET project will benefit approximately 2,200 families or 11,000 people in Itarema.
