MAMIRAUÁ RESERVA, Amazonas State - Between January 18 to 24, 2010, as part of a partnership among USAID, ExxonMobil and Civil Society Mamiraua to produce an educational documentary, 16 young people made a field visit to the communities of Mamiraua Reserve, in the state of Amazonas.
The youths visited the communities of Maguari, Barroso and Sitio Fortaleza de São Jose, where they promoted educational activities, documented the way of life in the flooded forest and collected testimonies from local residents, which will be used in the video production.
The video shooting started in the community of Maguari, on January 19. The main characteristic of this community is the high mobility of residents, due to annual river fluctuations in the region. The main livelihood of local residents is fishing. Later, the expedition visited the community of Barroso, where one of the oldest residents reported the displacement of the community’s population due to collapsed river banks.
On January 22, the team visited the community of Sitio Fortaleza de São Jose, where the main economic activities are cattle raising and fishing.
